On October 13, China Aviation News published a front-section report on page 3 titled "First 330 kV Polypropylene Insulated Cable Passes Factory Tests," highlighting the development of a 330 kV green polypropylene insulated cable.
Recently, a 330 kV, 2500 mm² polypropylene insulated cable, jointly developed by AVIC Baosheng High Voltage, Sinopec, Tsinghua University, the Electric Power Research Institute of Guangdong Power Grid Co., Ltd., the Electric Power Research Institute of State Grid Liaoning Electric Power Co., Ltd. and HJ Polymer China Co., Ltd. (Jiangyin), successfully passed the full set of factory tests. The cable completed a long-duration power-frequency withstand test at 420 kV for 60 minutes in a single attempt, and all electrical, mechanical and thermal parameters met the requirements. This is the first breakthrough at the 330 kV voltage level in China and fills a gap in the country's technology.
Polypropylene insulated cable is a new type of recyclable, green power transmission equipment. Compared with conventional cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable, it offers clear advantages: fully recyclable insulation, lower energy consumption in production, stable insulation performance and excellent current-carrying capacity. These advantages fit the development of new-type power systems and the low-carbon upgrading of power grids.
As a joint development partner, HJ Polymer China drew on its deep expertise in polymer shield materials for high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage cables to solve the key technical problem of the shield-to-insulation interface. The company supplied the 330 kV ultra-high-voltage polypropylene-based shield material for the project. It achieved coordinated thermal, mechanical and electrical performance between the shield layer and the polypropylene insulation, effectively suppressing interface defects and reducing the risk of partial discharge, and laid a solid material foundation for the project.
The large-section polypropylene cables of HJ Polymer China's partner, at 66 kV, 110 kV and 220 kV, have all obtained type certification from authoritative bodies, and the 330 kV ultra-high-voltage cable has now completed China's first factory test. HJ Polymer China has mastered a complete set of technologies for ultra-high-voltage polypropylene-based semi-conductive shield compounds, supporting the construction of new-type power systems and the green transformation and upgrading of power equipment.
